A question for LEO's with Master's Degrees or command level experience.?
For quite some time now I've wanted to get my master's degree, but I'm still not really sure what I should get it in. Down the road I would like to advance to the command level at my department. My B.A. is in Law and Justice (fancy wording for criminal justice). I'm aware of a Criminology program I could go into, but in terms of advancement within my department, I don't know how desirable that would be. Anyone have some suggestions for programs or specific majors? I'm hoping for something that could help me to advance but also give me knowledge of some different and innovative ways to deal with crime in a city or county setting. Any insight or suggestions are appreciated.
Also, if you know of any good places to find scholarships for law enforcement specific majors, let me know. I'm lacking the $10k-$20k needed to get this degree.

A degree in any of the governmental programs or or business admin programs is usually good. Gives you a lot of information and some insight into being high brass in a department. Dealing with other political government units, unions and other worker organizations, the press and other media and lots of other aspects of police or any business command/executive.
As to schools. No real idea, sorry. Lots of great ones out there in law enforcement and business.
Can't give you much on specific majors, they vary and like your bachelors the name changes by school for the same basic course of study. I had the advantage of being from a very large urban environment. Locally I had a good number who even had specialized programs for working cops and business people. I also had a department that would pay for any college classes so I never looked into anything like grants or scholarships.
I happened to pick one program where many of the classes were taught by current or retired top command staff from my own and nearby departments. It was convenient. We worked in a class cohort system, all taking the same courses towards our goal. One class 5 hours a week, with the morning and evening classes on the same day a mirror of the other. As I said designed for those who work so you did no have to take the day off or miss court to attend. 18 months with no breaks at all to a master's.
As to how desirable. Not sure how much you want to get away from real police work into admin. I actually got stuck when I showed some talent. After being promoted out of detectives I just, by my bad luck, did some fill in work for another sergeant who took pregnancy & family leave.
I apparently did very well and the bosses would not let me back to the street for almost 9 years.
Then, and only then, did I decide to learn more about running a department.
I changed my goal of a counseling masters to the administration masters.
There are times when I feel I would have helped more, with more personnel satisfaction, by sticking with counseling.
Good luck
