What happened to 4 wheel steering in cars?

It was supposed to be the next big thing some years ago but just faded away in silence...

It turned out to be not that hot after all. The benefits do not warrant the increased cost, and electronics can provide us with similar benefits today in terms of vehicle handling and stability. 4 wheel steering was a big thing in an age when things were still largely banking on mechanical solutions. We have left that era, and are now basically seeing relatively simple, mechanical solutions brought to top notch performance through electronic management - with similar or better effects. I agree it's a bummer though. 4 wheel steering was cool.

It was just marketing hype. There's no real need for 4 wheel steering when 2 wheel steering gets the job done just fine.

4 wheel steering just adds unnecessary complication and expense to the manufacture.
