Why does my new car smell?
I just bought a brand-new car about a month ago and it even used to have that 'new car smell'. Now I smell kindof an ammonia-like smell or skunky or something like that in the back seat of my car. I do not leave my windows open, or my car unlocked. Please note, that I did sniff myself and I do not smell bad. Any ideas??

It requires a nose to smell, so I guess you smelled a stink in your car. I'd pull that rear seat out and see if an animal crawled up there and died. Also, put it up on a rack and check underneath. I have seen dead animals in engine compartments. Another possibility is; are you using synthetic oil with extended oil change intervals? IT can cause a smell that is hard to get rid of. The previous owner of my Ford Ranger used synthetic and I switched back to regular oil changed every 3,000 miles and the smell decreased, but not totally gone yet. It almost smells like the charcoal filter (evaporative emissions) got full of stale gasoline. Another thing to check is pull the carpet out of the trunk and see if there is a fuel leak in that area. The fuel would go stale and make a bad smell.

The new car smell comes from all the plastics and the chemicals used in the car production process.
