Can someone that is a part of clergy hold an elected government position?

For some reason, I thought that this would violate the separation of church and state.

    Yes, however they will have to complete their duties in government without respect to any church or religious group.

    As far as Roman Catholic, it could happen until later in Pope John Paul II reign. So, today the answer for a Catholic priest or Bishop is no. The U.S. government did not have a problen with it.
