Well.....yes, and no. It all depends upon the person and how relaxed you allow yourself to be. It's the insertion of the speculum that most find uncomfortable..Me, included.I just went for one yesterday and he didn't use the speculum, because he knows how much I find it uncomfortable. He was able to get my sample without it. :) I took Vicodin just in case though. :) The whole entire exams lasts 5 minutes tops, so it's not that horrific if you can bear a few minutes of being uncomfortable.

Are they doing a Trans-vaginal ultrasound or an abdominal one? Mine is abdominal, where I have to drink water. The act of taking the pap smear is like a little brush, to which they scrape cells off your cervix and send them in to be tested. You won't feel this, but if you do, it's kinda of like the feeling of a cats' tongue.

Good Luck, hun and don't worry too much.

If you're uncomfortable having the doctor look down there, just tell her that you don't want her to look down there and refuse to disrobe. (Don't change into any exam gown they give you; it will make it easier for them to try to look down there.) Doctors have no right to make you feel uncomfortable like that. The doctor can't force you to allow them to look down there.

It's your body and you have the right to refuse them.
