Can cps question your child about other pols case?

I found out today that 2 of my children were questioned at school by a cps worker about a missing mother and child from another county. They also asked them after that what kind of punishment they received at home..I don't know what's up but I don't like it. The people they asked about I have never heard of and when I contacted cps about it I was told that they questioned my kids bc I wasn't home and my lights were on , they also gave my kids a different name than they told me they were looking for. Can cps legally question your child about someone elses case?
