Need help with a two-step equation?

Alright my algebra teacher was really confusing with teaching us this today, I got completely confused and wasn't able to do two step equations with a variable as the numerator in a fraction. The question I am trying to do is a/3 (the equation) + 4 = 6 as you may or may not know, I have to solve for what the variable equals, but could somebody show me how I could solve this problem?

Update:

Sorry if it's a bit confusing, I tried to substitute the / as the bar that separates the numerator and denominator. I remember that my teacher said something about multiplying or dividing by the reciprocal?

Update 2:

And something about Least Common Denominators.

Update 3:

If I remember sorta clearly it was something like you take the fraction and flip it...I just remember from the lesson that he was teaching us something like if you have 1/7+__= 1 and the answer was 7/7, sorry I can't be of much more help.

    It's fairly easy my friend

    a/3 + 4 = 6 Ok so what you want to do here is isolate the variable, which in this case includes the entire fraction so

    a/3 +4 = 6

    -4 -4

    a/3 = 2 is what you have afterwards and you just multiply the two numbers (3 times 2 = 6) and voila, a=6

    William, these are rather easy. If you have a single fraction involved you simply multiply all terms by the denominator (3).

    3(a/3 + 4 = 6)

    a+12 = 18

    a+12-12= 18-12

    a= 6

    If you have more than one multiply by the least common denominator of the fractions.

    a/3 + 4 = 6

    a/3 = 6 - 4

    a/3 = 2

    the opposite of dividing by 3 is multiplying by 3

    3a/a = 3(2)

    a = 6

    Rule 1: If you do something, you have to do it on both sides of the equal sign.

    Rule 2: Use opposite operators to undo something

    (a/3) +4 = 6

    Add -4 to both sides

    (a/3) +4 -4 = 6 -4

    (a/3) = 2

    Multiply by 3 to undo a divide by 3. You have to do it to both sides

    a = 6

    Ok you typed the equation very strangely. Is the equation a/3 + 4 = 6?

    If so:

    (a/3 x 3/1) + 4 = 6 (3/1)

    a + 4 = 18

    -4. -4

    a = 14

    There you go!
