Paul Ryan being the VP (assuming Romney gets elected which still seems somewhat of a long shot to me) is the best position to get him to become president. I don't think he would ever be democratically elected...
...I think there are a lot of conservatives hoping that Romney dies in office (again, assuming he gets elected).

I'm sure he knew at the time that Romney would be running for re-election in 2016 and that he'll have to wait until 2020.
