What were the last few months of your dog like before they died?
Did they have declining health until one day they just lost it all or did they seem healthy as always but one day just passed away?
Also what are some ways to "dispose" of the body cheaply?

He was sick for a year and a half from cancer. There were some limitations on things like his stamina, due to a tumor on his heart, but he was otherwise very happy and enjoyed life. Eventually a tumor in his spleen ruptured, and he was gone in less than 24 hours (I had to have him euthanized to end suffering).
Some will go without warning, some will linger, some will suffer and have to be put to sleep. It all depends on what is wrong with the dog, and on the individual dog. If they have no chronic illness, they may just have a heart attack in their sleep and be gone when you get up in the morning.
I had my dog buried. It cost me $150 (large dog, needed a bobcat to dig the grave). Your vet can also cremate them. If you don't want to deal with the body, the vet can take care of that too. Your local shelter might, but I don't think you would like what they do with them.

I had a Bichon frise that was at the time 14 years old. Sadly her last few months were not the greatest. She had always loved food and then she sudddenly slowed her eating. I thought nothing of it really, just that she was getting older. I had then noticed that she had not eaten any food and was getting very skinny. I took her to the vet and he said that she had cancer in her body and was only suppose to live till next week or so. I didn't wan't to have to put her down so I brought her back with me and we lived the next few days very closely. After a few days she couldn't walk and was in terrible pain. I had no other choice then to have her put to sleep. The second before the vet injected the fluid into her body she had already passed. I always wished that she could of died from old age but sadly that wasn't the case. You can bury your dog which is cheap but I have always prefered to have them cremated. I am tearing up right now so I have to end my response, Rest in peace Lexy...

my jack russell was active to pretty much the end ... she developed acute pancreatitis and spent three days at the vet ... i brought her home, two days later she was not doing well so an appointment made to bring her in monday morning to the vet ... sunday night i took her out for a pee and she was walking and seemed okay, a bit slow ... she started to decline at two in the morning and took her last breath before two thirty in the morning ... i am not sure of cheap ways to dispose of the body ... i spent $128 to have her cremated privately at a quality crematorium ...

She was sick for months before she "just lost it all." Kidney failure. She died peacefully at home and we buried her beneath the tree she always loved to sit under, her favorite spot.
