Multiple Questions! Will You Please Help Me?

I never had a certain position in volleyball. My first coach preferred to put me in as an outside (not like I played. He had favorites.), but then he got arrested. I got a new coach, and he out me in as a libero. A lot.

I'm trying out for club, and I want to know what you should be able to do to make a 13s team for each position.

Also, can you still make a 13s team if your serves are 95% consistent but really high and your sets are mediocre at best?

What are some things I can do to get better at serving lower?

What are good exercises to build up arm strength, so when you're getting up from a dive it's fast and not as off balance?

Do you know if its possible to try out for two positions at try outs?

What are some good general workouts I could do?

Last question!

Do you think each position has a look? Like outsides have rounder faces or something? I'm just wondering.

Thanks!

    1. To play power, you need to be able to hit it over the net. I play power and I was on the 13u team last year. I was a crappy hitter but it went over and not into the net. You also want to be an okay blocker. There will be times when the ball is hit offside and you could make it or break it depending on whether you can block. But don't worry about that to much, 13u is generally short so you will see lots of coaches skip over blocking entirely until a good halfway into season.

Middle, you will need to be a good blocker. That's pretty much the only thing you'll do. Block.

Um, for offside it's basically the same as power.

Setter, you'll obviously need to be a pretty good set and you're also the play maker so you gotta make plays and be observant.

Libero, you gotta be good at passing nice and high right to the setter. You also need a pretty good serve as libero gets subbed on a lot to serve.

    2. You will make the team based on that consistent serve because 13u coaches have the awful mindset of "over and in no matter how crappy." You probably wont be setter though.

    3. It really depends on whether you overhand or underhand. If you underhand, well I'm not really sure because my underhand serve is horrible :).

But if you over hand you should work on hitting the ball higher and more on top of it. Also make sure your hand is fully extended when you make contact with the ball.

    4. Well I'm not sure how the strength of your arms makes getting off the floor from the dive more graceful and balanced... instead you can try in a gym or any wood or tile floor, you can sprawl out on your stomach and then hop back into a standing position. Keep practicing and your time and grace should improve.

    5. As far as volleyball goes, I've never been to a tryout where you have to pick a position. They usually rotate through all the positions for each player and see for themselves what your best at. So to put it shortly, yes you can try out for more than one position

    6. Cardio, push ups, squatts and just practicing the sport is my recommendation :)

    7. Well, liberos are generally quite short and middles are very tall.

For serving lower, snap your wrist while you hit the ball so instead of lifting the ball over the net, you are pushing it across, if that makes sense.

I dont know anything about club volleyball so i can't help you there xD

But for your last question, the only thing i have seen is generally, the libero is short. But honestly, each position comes in all shapes and sizes. It's based on ability, not height/ weight. For instance, you can be super tall but you can't jump worth a thing so, despite your height, you wouldn't be a good blocker. See?

Try outs are open in club, the coach will put you where you best fit. Your club may have a few 13 teams, your best bet is to play on a non-traveling team til you get your experience up. We called it Metro team my daughter played last year and learned alot, she has been asked to the 14s traveling team this year.
