Religion is people's attempts to
(1) control the masses through fear (hell) or hope (heaven) - this continues to this very day
(2) try to explain the unknown - where did we come from, where did everything come from?
(3) try to convince us that we are special - the center of the universe
(4) to define a basic set of laws (commandments, etc).
Religion is a man-mode concept that has caused much misery, hatred, violence and death. When people say "my god is better than your god" and use violence to prove their point, then religion is a failure.
