Will it be possible to buy Windows 7 online after Windows 8 is launched?

I am thinking of upgrading to Windows 7 from XP but don't know whether to do it sooner rather than later.

Microsoft will quit selling it, but some retailers will still have copies available for a while. Given that Windows 8 looks like it will be a disaster of epic proportions, get Windows 7 while you can.

I'm sure some stores will still carry it. If your PC is still running XP then it might not be a good idea to install 7. Your PC might not perform as well as a newer computer.

If your hardware is up to it and you want to save yourself some cash, I suggest upgrading to Windows 8. Anyone with XP, Vista, or 7 can upgrade to 8 Pro for $40. Sure beats spending $100 or more on Windows 7.

Right now benchmarks are showing that Windows 8 will beat 7 in the performance department. That alone is worth $40 to me. If there's enough outcry about the Metro UI, there's a real strong possibility that it might get patched out or further refined. Heck, there are even mods for Windows 8 that restore the start menu if people really can't live without it.

Besides, once you get all your favorite programs pinned to the taskbar and icons on your desktop you probably won't be using the start screen much at all. People really are overreacting to the whole Metro thing.

Since you recounted you don't play too many games for your computer, the low-budget and the most logical direction could be to get a dedicated GPU inside the variety of 512 MB - 1 GB. Core 2 Duo processor and 2GB RAM is greater than ample for now. Home windows 7 should sail without problems with such hardware. Go for the GPU that has AGP connector... I presently have Pentium IV HT processor and 1.2 GB RAM... And windows 7 runs excellently !!! Only the Transparency in Aero subject matters does not work, that's for the reason that I should not have a committed GPU and depend on the onboard video card... :-( here are some reputed brands for the GPU : Nvidia (recommended), ATI, Palit, Sparkle and so on. Etc. Swap to home windows 7, you'll be able to love it !! Regards, Preetam Das
