The battery keeps the bios configuration stored, when it is removed the bios will be reset to default and any customization made to it will need to be done again once the battery is replaced.

You can via the CMOS battery and you could verify which battery you want just via checking your motherboard handbook For the surroundings it depends upon your mom board model Some just clear all the environment as soon because the battery goes off and most give a while to alter the battery right away also so new motherboards have a backup CMOS so nothing goes incorrect in any respect
