What is the procedure for selling my car?
What check-list should I follow when selling my car so I am released from liablity immediately after selling it? In other words, when the buyer leaves my driveway, what if he pulls out and immediately crashes into somebody, incuring liability. When the cops run the plates it's going to come back to me because I haven't had time to file papers with the DMV yet. How does a seller get released from liability immediately after selling a car?

The BEST way is to go with the buyer to the DMV & change the title there with him. Make time so you are protected. That way you are safe from all things legal.
It is amazing how many people let their car go away but it is still in their names up to 10 years later! And like you said you as the legal car owner are still liable.
