What kind of fish are they? It's impossible to determine if it's too small if you don't mention what species you have.

Yes, the tank is too small. Likely these fish are not full grown yet, since almost all fish in a fish store are juveniles. Those fish will most certainly grow too large for that tank, and baby fish can grow into larger fish very swiftly.

Yes, species matters in the big picture, but one can tell the tank is too small from the vague description you have already given.

And to the idiots misapplying the 1 inch per gallon rule, that is a general stocking rule for a specific type of fish AFTER you have met the minimum tank requirements.

Is it that hard to tell what kind of fish they are

Goldfish? A goldfish would need 55+ gallon tank cause most people have goldfish

Tetra's? they need to have at least 6+ to school

    Or something like sucker fish?

The rule of thumb is that for every inch of fish you have, you need one gallon of water. Unless you have a lot of miscellanious items in the tank, the space should be good.

No its perfect the rule is one inch of fish per gallon so your fish have lots of room .. Right now you could keep them in a three gallon tank if you wanted !!
