How does a print server work?

I want more than just a single paragraph of the OBVIOUS "It enables multiple computers to print to a printer or group of printers". I want to know what happens from the time I pull up the interface, to the time I click on a printer. (What protocols are set into motion in what order). Let's say, too, that this device downloads the printer's drivers to your PC. I want to know how ALL of this takes place... please answer or point me in the right direction? I want to know what logs are generated and where, so I can troubleshoot an issue more effectively.

thanks.

Update:

And NO, Google is USELESS 100million articles that all say "It is a device that enables a group of computers to a printer or group of printers" is USELESS to me.

Specifically, I work as a junior tech on a network with thousands of PCs and hundreds of printers. I have 4 freshly imaged Dell E6500's that have the exact same WIN 7 Enterprise image (32 bit--we are not allowed to enable 64 bit). 2 of the four will connect to a certain printer, whereas 2 will not. They will all connect to other printers, but this HP 4015 refuses to connect. "Windows cannot connect to the printer Error: 0x0000007e". 3 of the four PCs are in the exact same VLAN and exact same Active Directory Groups. 1 (mine) is in an administrative VLAN and ADMIN group--yet it still will not connect with that printer. Before I escalate this issue, I need to make sure that I have not overlooked anything. With fresh images, identical machines... I'm at a loss. Also, this is not user account specific, but is definitly machine specific.

Oh, and even though I am not supposed to add printers as "local devices", I tried. It looks like it adds, but when y

    Google is your friend.

    Edit:

Google is only useless to you because you're probably using poor search terms. GIGO - Garbage In, Garbage Out. Search something like "How does a print server function." If that fails, go to a book store or library and find a CCNA or MCSA text book. It'll tell you in there.
