Are you talking about buying an apartment or renting? Because those are 2 totally different things in NYC. If you're talking about buying an apartment, you're going to have to have a very high income and great credit to afford the $500,000 (minimum) it would cost to buy a 1 bedroom. Not only would you be making the mortgage payments, you'd also being paying the maintenance fees of about $500 a month.

If you're talking about renting, it all depends on where you want to live and how high your standards are. If you look on craigslist, you could probably get an apartment in a day with someone looking to either sublet, share, or offering temporary housing (which is now illegal in NYC, but it still happens). If you're looking for your own place, you'd have to see the place first through a broker (usually all the good apartments are snatched up by brokers who charge a fee of 1st months rent), fill out the paperwork, meet with the landlord who will likely run a background check, credit check, and income verification. If the paperwork is accepted, then meet with them again to sign the lease, then pay the rent and security deposit. That would take about 2 weeks.

You also have too keep in mind the areas. If you find a place for $600 on craigslist, it's very likely a scam. If you find a place for $1000 on craigslist, it's very likely in a bad area like anywhere in the Bronx, Hollis, Jamaica, Canarsie, East New York, Bushwick, Bed-Stuy, Brownsville, etc. If you want to live in Manhattan, you better have a solid job and can afford the $2,500 a month rent. If you want to live in a safe area, you better be able to verify your income and be ready to pay $1,500 a month (not including utilities) -- no good landlord will rent to someone who doesn't have a job unless they're a slumlord. And that apartment will likely be an illegal apartment in the slums. Usually landlords will require making 30x the rent and be employed for about 6 months -- so if the apartment is $1,200, you have to make at least $36,000.

As far as the cost of a flight, that would be about $300.

You have so many questions about such basic things, it makes me think you are ill prepared for any of this.

However, you get a JOB in the new place first. Then you can do everything else. Get a real estate agent. No craigslist, you don't have the time to mess with this.

You can learn the cost of airfare by looking online for such things.
