Because the rate doesn't include those who have simply given up.

The US census has the "non farm" employment total as roughly 120,000,000 (rounded) so assuming that number as 100% employment, .3 percent of that would be 360,000 which means the reported number 114,000 represents roughly 32% of actual .3% which is the approximate degree of inaccuracy on which most ostensible 'expert analysts' tend to agree, so there you go. If the counting method is consistently off by the same degree (which it is) then the numbers indeed conform to the current counting method.

The government has never represented these unemployment reports as an accurate assessment of a complicated reality. These reports are a general indicator just like stock market averages and no one has ever suggested otherwise. Are you now going to assert no one has ever cited stock market averages as a general indicator? The numbers are the numbers, they're not accurate but they are consistently inaccurate and that establishes a rough general indicator. Sorry to break the terrible news to you but unemployment IS down and the conditions ARE trending toward incremental improvement. Get over it.

Spin? Spin this: Why are you rooting for things to get worse?

Spin is taking a fact that hurts you, and then twisting it to fit your ideology.

That's exactly what you're trying to do with this question.

It's 30 days before the election, that's the only explanation.
