An interesting cake to bring to a class?

I have a long day of group work at my uni, so I said I would bring some cake for all of us (15ish people).

I am, if I am to say so, quite good at baking interesting cakes, and would like to impress :)

But, it also has to be a bit practical: I have 1½hour commute to uni, changing trains and buses in rush hour, and also have to carry it around until the group work in the afternoon.

I make a smashing cheesecake, as I also make cream cheese myself, but that is just too unpractical! It would have to be a cake that can easily be eaten out of the hand, or maybe in a napkin.

Then I thought of making red velvet cake (with freeze dried strawberries: I always feel a bit cheated that the color doesn't really reflect what's in it ;) ) I figured if I baked two very thin layers separately, I could keep one in the baking pan, and layer the other on top with the cream cheese frosting?

I would like one that first of all looks really interesting (though I don't want to do sugar-paste), but of course is also delicious :)

Do you have any ideas? I would love inputs!

Update:

@Vanilla cake: I'm not looking for simple. Vanilla cake is not that impressive :b

I don't know if any of these are appropriate for you to transport, but they are interesting.

Why don't you rather take a tart, so you don't have to worry about the icing, etc...

But don't you think that people who don't know much about baking cakes, will not be impressed with anything you bring. They will mostly be impressed that you even brought a cake. So if it were me, I wouldn't knock myself out for people like that.

Take a Genoise that has been cut into several layers and each layer brushed with a special syrup and finally the whole cake is frosted with a liquored frosting. Maybe sprinkle some toasted nuts on the frosting or sides of the cake.

Bake chocolate cake in a loaf pan, and slice the pieces about an inch thick. Mix peanut butter with powdered sugar and a teeny bit of milk for frosting, and make little chocolate cake-and-peanut-butter sandwiches! They will look cool and taste fantastic, and they're really simple.
