I answer questions about this and that, about science, bra fitting, travel or what ever thing I just find interesting this week. I am a chemistry student in Denmark.

  • "d-orbitals with opposite values of m[l] combined giving real standing waves with boundary surfaces"?

    I've been asked

"Show that d orbitals with opposite values of m[l] may be combined in pairs to give real standing waves with boundary surfaces as shown in Fig. 4.15 and with forms that are given in eqn 4.19."

    Here are the relevant information:

    http://i.imgur.com/IcC9yN0.jpg

    I've also been handed a hint-sheet:

"There are five d-orbitals (l=2) for n>=3. All except the orbital with m[l]=0 are complex; however it is more common to display them as their real components, i.e. the following linear combinations:

    d[z^2]=d[0]

    d[x^2-y^2]=1/sqrt(2) (d[+2]+d[-2])

    d[xy]=1/(i*sqrt(2)) (d[+2]-d[-2])

    d[yz]=1/(i*sqrt(2)) (d[+1]+d[-1])

    d[zx]=1/sqrt(2) (d[+1]-d[-1])

The value of m[l] is given as the subscript in the above. The purpose of this exercise is to check, that the above normalized sums of d-orbital functions with m[l] of opposite signs are real (Eqn. 2-5)"

(Sorry for formatting. Take [] to mean sub-script)

Got to be honest, I'm lost... I've got no clue and don't know where to even start.

  • Calculate the normalization constant for an oscillator with v = 3?

Help :( We've been looking at this problem all over the weekend, and we don't seem to be closer to cracking what it is...

We know that the normalization constant multiplied with the wavefunction must give the integral of 1 (right?)

We know the Hermite polynomial for v=3 is 8y^3-12y

In our book, Quanta, Matter and Change, we see that the integral from -infinity to infinity, of the normalized wavefunction times the wavefunction is απ^(1/2)*2^v*v!, which in our case is 48α*π^(1/2).

    (1/(48α*π^(1/2)))^1/2 should then equal N? (α=x/y) N=y/(96x*π^(1/2))

But in that case, shouldn't the intergral from -infinity to infinity of y/(96x*π^(1/2)) * 8y^3-12y * e^(y^2/2) = 1 ? Because it doesn't, it gives us all sorts of mess :(

Please, if someone can give us some clues!! We have 2 more problems over the same theme, but I'm hoping that if we figure this one out, we will be able to do the others...

  • I've made the tool-box in photoshop go weird :/?

I was trying to do photoshop with split screen yesterday, and things got a little confusing, as a lot of the photoshop windows were still on my left side, even though photoshop was only open on the right... When moving things around etc. I accidentally did something to my tool-box, and now it just shows the logo, and when I click on it, I go to the website... I've tried removing it, and selecting it again, but it's still just the shortcut to the website, instead of showing the actual tools... How do I get it back?

  • My computer doesn't realize that there is wireless?

This morning, my computer said there was a mistake, and I restored it to yesterday. And since then, it hasn't been able to even look for wireless internet.

It shows the logo for cable-connected internet (which is not available either), and if I choose "connect to a network" that's all it looks for too.

When I say trouble shoot, it just says that, surprise surprise, there is no cable.

If I chose "set up a new connection" it also only suggests broadband.

When I go to "Manage Wireless Networks" it says 'Wireless in not currently enabled' , and shows me no options to enable it, or manage any networks (and I'm at my parents house, and they have 2 wireless networks in the house + I can see plenty other from my moms computer, which I am writing from now)

When I go to Network Connections to try to enable wireless, it only shows me cable-internet.

What to do? It seems my computer has completely forgotten that there is such thing as wirelss!

  • I'm pet-sitting a cat, and it won't shut up?!?

My parents are abroad for 3 weeks, and I'm talking care of their cat.

The first 2 weeks have gone really well, but now it's driving me nuts! It's meowing so much, it's practically screaming! It does it both during day and nighttime, but worse at night: I literally can't sleep for the noise - last night was the worst, it kept me awake from 10pm to 1am, woke me up again at 3:30am, and again at 7am, and finally at 10am. I cannot take another night like that. I'm sure the neighbors can hear it too.

I don't know what is wrong with it! It's kitty-tray is nice and clean, there's plenty of food and water :/ Nothings changed since the first 2 weeks!

Could it be bored? My parents have a big yard that they allow it to go into, and they also have a dog that the cat gets well along with.

I live in a flat in the capital, so it's only been inside here. I've been home for most of the time since I've had the cat, so it hasn't been alone. And again, why now? When the first 2 weeks were fine.

I've considered if it was in heat, but I've seen it in heat before, and it doesn't seem like that - it's just regular, loud meows, not those strange ones. And it's not being all gross either (when it's in heat, it will stand around with it's butt in the air etc. - and it's doing none of those things now)

How do I shut it up? So far, I'm trying to prevent it from sleeping too much during the day (as it did yesterday), because then hopefully it will be too tired to scream all night.

  • I've made page on Facebook, but it doesn't work!?

I've made a page on facebook to go with my blog, so I've signed up as a "community or cause" - but nothing works! I don't even have a search box, I can't comment on anything etc.

I've tried to look in the help-center, but no help there :/ Is there something I am missing?

  • Why does my knee tender point hurt?

I am participating in a study of Fibromyalgia, and the hospital needed non-fibromyalgia patients to compare with - enter me.

They did a tender point test on me, and for 16 out of the 18 tender points, I got a zero pain, but my knee area (the medial fat pad proximal to the joint line) I had pain. Not as much as a patient, obviously, but at all the other spots, even though the doctor pressed really hard, it was just uncomfortable, not with actual pain that made me flinch. It's not bad, since I obviously didn't notice it before, but I was just wandering what may have caused it? I haven't done anything unusual, so I guess it is something I do all the time that causes it? So I should probably stop doing that.

Any guesses? Or what can I do so it isn't tender (a stretch or exercise or something)?

  • Why am I so healthy? (I'm obese)?

A couple of times, I've participated in research at universities, where they gather health-profiles, to compare to patients etc. Every time, they comment on how surprisingly healthy I am.

They've checked my fasting blood sugar (4mmol/L - normal is 3 to 6-ish), they did an Insulin Tolerance Test (where I was very sensitive to insulin, and my hormones were very potent at stablizing me = very low chance of diabetes), they checked my cholesterol (don't remember the number, but it was much better than what they would have expected for a lean person, even), blood pressure (109 / 70 - normal is 120/80), pulse at rest (55 - normal is 60-100. 40-60 is athletes. The person who took this insisted that I must be in very good shape, but I don't do anything), measured WHR (0.7 - Optimal is 0.7-0.79, and it is bad if it is more than 0.85), and a lot of other things: Most of it was better than average, and nothing was worse than average.

As I mentioned, I don't do any form of exercise, or take walks, or anything. I walk to the bus, I go up the stairs for classes, and I walk to get groceries, that's pretty much it. I don't struggle to do any of these things, but I wouldn't want to run after the bus or walk to the 3rd floor.

I eat alright, though too much obviously, compared to how little I do. I like veggies and healthy foods, fish is my preferred meat and I never eat fast food, but I probably eat more carbs (rice, bread etc) and a bit more sweets than ideal, and I also get drunk in weekends. I prioritize my sleep, and I don't smoke, so nothing too unusual there.

^So it's not like I live like a health nut at all: So how can I be healthier than average, despite having a BMI between 35.6 and 38.2? (my weight goes up and down a bit), and thus unhealthy by definition?

What would happen if I was lean and in good shape then? Would I live to be a 100? :b Would all these values change a lot (and in that case, would it go too far in the other end of the spectrum?), or are they pretty stable no matter the weight, and in that case, is it just impossible for me to be unhealthy? O.o

It all seems very contradictory to me!

  • How do I get the address bar to be google again? (Chrome)?

In Chrome, normally if you type a word instead of a webaddress, it googles it.

But, after I downloaded a new programme, it now searches through "searchfunmoods.com" instead. How do I reset it, so it uses google again?

  • An interesting cake to bring to a class?

I have a long day of group work at my uni, so I said I would bring some cake for all of us (15ish people).

I am, if I am to say so, quite good at baking interesting cakes, and would like to impress :)

But, it also has to be a bit practical: I have 1½hour commute to uni, changing trains and buses in rush hour, and also have to carry it around until the group work in the afternoon.

I make a smashing cheesecake, as I also make cream cheese myself, but that is just too unpractical! It would have to be a cake that can easily be eaten out of the hand, or maybe in a napkin.

Then I thought of making red velvet cake (with freeze dried strawberries: I always feel a bit cheated that the color doesn't really reflect what's in it ;) ) I figured if I baked two very thin layers separately, I could keep one in the baking pan, and layer the other on top with the cream cheese frosting?

I would like one that first of all looks really interesting (though I don't want to do sugar-paste), but of course is also delicious :)

Do you have any ideas? I would love inputs!

  • How to make Yahoo mail NOT reveal my full name?

When ever I write an email from my yahoo mail, my full name is written in the "from" tab - and I can't change it! I've changed my name in the account setting, hoping it would not show, but it still does - I can't find any settings to change it :o It is a big problem, because I have a rare last name, so if someone knows my last name, they can actually find out exactly where I live, and all sorts of stuff about me. So I basically can't use my email for anything but to email relatives and close friends?!

  • What bra brand does Trinny and Susannah use on their show?

I have casting with Trinny and Susannah tomorrow, and I know they often fit women into bras as well... but it is very few brands who have my size, so does any one know what brands they use on the show? If it is a limited size brand, I will just bring a bunch of my own bras... I tried googling for what they used, but I couldn't see it anywhere :/ (Well, that sucks for the sponsering brand, I suppose :b )

  • F5 to refresh? New computer! (And "bigger than" & "less than")?

I just got a new computer, a Compaq, and I have also decided to "make the switch" from Firefox to Chrome... So there are a few changes I need to get used to! One thing, though, is that F5 doesn't seem to refresh, it opens a new page instead. How can I make it refresh instead? Do I need to set it as a short-cut, or is there another key for that?

And bonus question, dunno if anyone can answer. I bought the computer while in the US, but I live in Denmark and have therefore set the keyboard to Danish, as we have more letters in our alphabet.. I am not bothered that the print on the keys doesn't match as I type without looking anyway, but I cannot find the "less than" and "bigger than" key! Normally on Danish key boards, they are to the left of Z, but there is no symbol key there on this one. And on the keys where it is printed, I have ;, and :. Is there a way that I can get the computer to show me what is behind all the keys? 2 computers ago, I also had an American computer, and I just never figured it out :(

  • Can't I make a facebook-account w/o a phone?

I have a little blog where I want to review clothes etc., and would like a facebook account to go with it, so I can post to the clothing companies' facebooks, join the groups that other bloggers are in etc.

But I can't seem to create an account w/o a unique phonenumber? And since I already have my own account, I've already used my number there...

How can I create a profile, or a page then? If I make a "fan page" to use as my blog-facebook instead, will it show up on my regular account? I want them to be completely seperate, so I can link people to the blog-facebook, and not indirectly leading them to my personal facebook...

  • Is it common knowledge that... ?

Is it common knowledge to have a vague idea of the fact that time is relative to speed? To have an idea of what the theory of relativity is? (I am not talking about understanding it, or knowing the math, just knowing of it)

My brother was very surprised to hear this, and enthusiastically told me how he had just heard of it. He didn't believe it, when I said I of course knew. Then we have discussed whether it is common knowledge or not. I said I bet 75%+ of people in college knows. He said he bet it was 1%.

Did you know? Do you think most people know?

  • Is the long-haired gene on cats on their X-chromosome?

I've seen several litters of kittens, who had a Forest Cat mother, and a regular short-haired father. In all these litters, the female kittens turned out to be short-haired, and the males were mainly long-haired (I've only seen the males as kittens, as I only have female cats. Though the male kittens were definitely more fluffy)

So, I assume it must be on the x-chromosome? So that the male cats would always get the long haired X from their mother, but the females would need it from both (so also assuming it is recessive)? So a female kitten with a short haired father, could never be long-haired?

  • What are the states of matter? (physics)?

I was watching QI, and there was a question of how many states of matter there was, and obviously most would say 3 or 4, but they said 6, as they also counted Bose-Einstein-condensate and Fermionic condensate. This made me curious, so I did a bit of read up.

As far as I can tell, they are both low-temperature superfluids. But there are several low-temperature superfluids which have much the same characteristica, so why are some counted and some not?

So what actually defines a state of matter?

If we base it on the differences in molecular interrelationships, which is very easy to see for the first 3 states of matter, then why is glass or liquid crystal not separate states? To me, it seems they indeed form very different 'patterns' or interrelationships between their molecules than the other states.

    .

There is a long list which are not considered states of matter (supersolids, degenerate matter, string-net liquid, super glass, dark matter (though, I suppose we don't know enough about that one to categorize it as anything), other kinds of plasma (or does the current state of plasma include both this and the regular ionized gas-kind?), other kinds of low-temperature states, many kinds of grid-like states, which are not counted...

So making a short, simple list of states of matter seems flawed, so maybe there ought to be just the 3 classical states of matter, defined as the common states, natrually occuring on earth, and then keep the rest which are more theoretical, cosmology-relevant, or lab-created states on another list, so to say? Or what? Are there any out there who are very knowledgeable on the subject, and can tell me a bit about what physicist think should be included on the list of states? I find it very interesting :D

  • Which outfits makes her look less big?

My friend and I are disagreeing on some things that a plus-size, busty girl should either always do, or never do. So we made 4 pics to compare:

    https://p.twimg.com/AuzYm0-CEAA-1U6.jpg

For pic 1 and 2, where does she look less big? (the difference is subtle, so just go with your instinct, don't speculate)

For pic 3 and 4, where does she look less big? (more obvious difference, of course)

For pic 1 and 4, where does she look less big? (aka. what is more no-go: tent or tight?)
