Should I quit my current job I hate if I haven't found a new one yet?
I'm sorry this is long!! I need advice! I keep applying to different jobs but am having trouble actually GETTING one. My current job is killing me. Been there aImost 2 years and I've been crying almost every night at work now. I just want to know what you guys would do.
*Its a waitressing job at a movie theater/restaurant. I work 3 forced doubles back to back every weekend, these are 18 hr shifts with NO KIND of break. You aren't allowed to even eat a quick snack or drink water. Also, a food runner was throwing up yesterday and they refused to send her home, and once I came to work late after getting rear ended on the way and I had a black eye. I got wrote up for coming in late.
*Because at the end of each shift we have to tip out every employee besides management and split your tips with every other server in the building, you don't make much money. I make $2.13 an hour and about $20-$40 in tips every shift, sometimes you make only $10. if I could keep my own tips it would be more. I only make enough for cell phone bills, gas, and food. I'm 18 and can't even afford to move out. I'm lucky my parents don't make me pay rent but I want to make more money so I don't feel like a loser for living in my parents house anymore.
*Management belittles me and other staff members, they're immature and cuss us out if we so much as drop a thing of ketchup, spread rumors about their staff, don't care about customers, etc. They run a poor business and I'm ashamed to work for such a crappy store. They have the highest turnover rate in the shopping center it's located in.
*It's affecting my health physically and mentally, I have slept a total of 5hrs at the most these past 4 days because of work. Weekends, 16hrs serving customers, 2 cleaning theaters and rolling silverware at close. I don't eat enough and get dehydrated. I get two days off a week. Right now I have to leave soon and I can barely move I'm so sore and I'm on the verge of tears.
*They refuse to work with your schedule. I want to go to college so I'm not stuck a effing waitress the rest of my life. I have enough money saved up for community college, but this place requires you make your job your top priority over everything in your life. They schedule students to come in during their class hours, they have no time to study, go to class tired...if I quit I could enroll and focus my time on getting the degree I want and finding a better job.
If you won't read this all don't even bother answering.

Sounds like a really bad place to work. But still, try not to quit until you find another, more reasonable, job, unless your parents are willing to just support you for awhile.
And keep track of the hours you work, your tips and tipouts, and keep your paystubs. When you find something else and quit, you can report them to your state department of labor. They're underpaying you. The law (and it's federal) allowing them to pay you 2.13 hourly says that if your total wages plus tips (and that's AFTER tipouts) is less that the regular minimum wage, now 7.25 per hour assuming you're in the US (higher in some states), the employer must make up the difference so you end up with at least 7.25 an hour including tips, before taxes. You could report them now, but they'd probably fire you, so if you need the job, it's better to wait.
Good luck.

First, It is illegal for them to work you for that long without a break. Look up our employee rights for your state. Then print them out and bring this in to them, and request politely that you be given your legal breaks when you work long hours. Always do your best, no matter what the circumstances of your position. It is your reputation, after all. You must not be looking very hard if you cannot find a serving job. The turnover rate is high, so keep looking. Servers can make v-e-r-y good money. Look for a place that serves cocktails.... you make LOTS more money that way. As a server, I made about 37 dollars an hour. Never under estimate the power of good customer service. You CAN make great money. Keep applying at all of the restaurants in your area or that you are willing to drive to. I can guarantee you that if you have experience, you WILL get a job that you can enjoy. Not all people are like the ones you work for now. If you have bills to pay, and do not have enough saved to allow you to go for a time without a job, then keep it while you look. You have already been there for 2 years. I do have a question for you though...WHY do you stay for those long hours if you are not scheduled???? Or.... do they actually schedule you that long?? Hang in there.... you WILL find other work that you will love in this field. Serving at most places is the best job to have if you are in school. They know that their employees have scheduling issues, and do their best to schedule all around their classes. Don't give up!!! Keep looking and applying.... you WILL find work.

In my opinion, you are basically exchanging the meagre money made with your health both physically and mentally. It seems like the company is exploiting you guys to a point of work abuse and company bullying to the employees. The company has no compunction when the employees fall sick or had an accident. If you are not even allowed a break let alone to drink water and going to the toilet is definitely also restricted, then you better leave before you really fall sick in such a terrible condition and environment. If you quit of course its a good thing to enroll in a class and focus your time on studying and later you can find a better job but in the meantime, you are short in the income. I'm sure your thoughts of quitting is there, but doing it, is another thing. Its best, if you need the money, hang in there until you can find another job. Getting a job is very hard in this economy.

Education is more important I would quit and look for a simple minimum wage job at McDonald s or any other fast food/retail business it's not worth your health for $2.13 an hr and 20-40$ every shift.

If you do not have to rely on these funds for living expenses then go ahead and quit. Give a two week notice If you do then find a job before quitting this job

Sorry, im not going to read all of that, but i read that you work 18 hour shifts with no break, this is ILLEGAL, speak to a union rep or in the UK we have government services which we can speak to about this kind of thing, i'm not sure what it's called in the US but look into it, by law you are entitled to unpaid breaks every few hours, your employer can't stop you taking them, they can say when to take them but not if you can or can't take them. Look into it, you can get your boss in big trouble, which means you might get a new boss who might be easier to work for.
