Why is my dogs butt/back always itchy ?

The area right about his bum , like where his tail is. He always LOVES it when I scratch it. Is that normal ?

If the dog has flees it is a place fleas love to munch, why because the dog has a hard time reaching it and they can munch without fear. But even without fleas, it is a spot the dog can't scratch themselves or has a hard time scratching so they like the help. Kind of that that spot on your back that you have a hard time reaching, that is the place that itches the most or seems to at least.

I would like to add an edit. I have one dog that tends to get yeasty. I have a spray bottle with a water vinegar mixture that I spray her with once in a while to keep the yeast down. Those dogs with yeast will scratch more often and might even scratch sores into themselves. You can generally tell a yeasty dog by the yeasty smell and signs they have been scratching.

It's tempting to give a benedryl but it's just an antihistamine, and your vet has already prescribed this. Don't give your dog anything unless prescribed by a vet. You did not mention diet. Many allergies can be treated with dietary changes. Try EVO, a grain-free food. Many dogs with chronic allergies have responded well to this. You can also try flax seed oil in his diet. When you switch foods, do it gradually (25% new food to 75% old food for 3 days, then 50/50, 75/25) to reduce the stress on his digestive system. Best of luck.

It could just be allergies or it could be that he needs his anal glands released. You can take him to your vet and have them do it for a minimal charge. There are glands in his butt that can fill up and when they are full can become itchy and irritated. Once the are released he won't feel itchy anymore. Some dogs need them released on a fairly regular basis. Talk to your vet, its a simple issue with a simple solution but I bet your puppy will appreciate the relief. :)

    Good luck!

My yellow lab is this way too. :) I have taken her to the dermatologist and both him and her regular doctor said her skin and hair are in great condition. I make sure she gets her monthly flea medication. They both believe it's allergies. I would make sure you look at his skin closely to rule out skin and flea problems. I try to add omega/fish oil to her diet so she doesn't get dry because that definitely adds to her itching problem if that happens. good luck!

Maybe dry skin? Or worms? Something stuck in his fur? Not sure, my dog doesn't do this....
