Are diseases curable?

My stepson says that if you have a disease it means it is something that cannot be cured. I disagree.

    * Majority of diseases can be prevented but can not be cured. (eg. Rabies, Hepatitis B, etc.)

    * Some diseases can not be cured but can be treated. (eg. Psoriasis)

    * Only very few diseases can be cured. The most common example of a complete cure is a bacterial infection treated with antibiotics.

Depends on the disease. Some can be cured. We can administer antibiotics to kill off the infectious agents (if they're bacteriological in nature) in a lot of them. The Plague that ran from the 1,300's through the mid 1.500's would have responded well to even a simple penicillin.

Other diseases can not be cured. The only thing we can do is to support the patient while the body fights off the infectious agent on its own. Dengue Fever is one such disease that there is no "Cure" but we can keep the patient alive (fluids, medications to control fever and keep it below lethal levels, etc) until the body's defenses can take care of the problem itself.

Still others have no real treatment at this time. HIV is one such. At least for now. There are things in testing that may be the cure but we don't know yet if they'll work in the human body like they do in computer simulations. Only time and Human Trials will tell.

But in the meantime, HIV is uncureable. We can keep a patient alive for quite a while nowadays, but there is as of yet no cure.

Technically, a disease is just a general term for in any illness, such as the flu or cancer. It strictly depends on the context of what 'disease' your referencing.

diseases can be cured or destroyed. a common cold is an infectious disease. sometimes people die from them however, most of the time, people live. our bodies fight off and destroy the invading parasites.
