Physics question!? Horizontal and vertical direction?
Why are distance/velocity in the horizontal direction and independent of distance/velocity in the vertical direction?

I'm assuming you are referring to an object in free fall. When an object is launched it has a y component of velocity and an x component. The same goes for displacement. The reason why they are independent is simple: neither one effects each other in terms of motion.
