Cathodic protection is used in some areas. Corrosion is not a big issue on most railways but it is the use by the heavy train cars going along the track that is more wear and tear. The more the track is used the more it wears out. If it is not used yes it will eventually rust away. The biggest corrosion issue for some places is the method used to hold the track down. The track itself is good but the spike, clip or whatever that holds it down is the part that is corroding. The use a rubber pads between the two metals has helped in some places.

Edit Work is also being done on the WHEELS of the train cars they corrode too.No new technologies just using existing in more creative ways.

Edit most of the NEW technology is in the making of the metal that is used to make the track. The actual track steel is of better quality lowering its rust rate.
