Planning a Christmas NYC trip.. please help!?

Hi, everyone.

I'm planing a trip to New York this December, and would love some advice from people that live there or frequently visit.

The trip is for two, low-maintenance people.

I'd like to spend around 400 dollars on this trip, but I'm willing to spend up to $800 if I have to.

I live in New York state, about 3 1/2 miles away.

We want to see all the lights, that's the main thing. But my fiance has never been to NYC before and I've only been there for concerts, games, etc. so we're not objected to seeing more!

With the info. I gave you guys,

do you think we should stay overnight or just have a day trip? As I said, I don't live too far away.

Should we drive or take the train?

Is it possible to use public transport/walking to see all the Christmas sights?

What are the best places to go for Christmas lights?

What are some things we absolutely cannot miss? (or at least things worth seeing!)

Thank you so much, guys!!!! Advice is greatly appreciated!

My friend, I'll try my best to answer you question.

In regards to your first and second questions. You can stay overnight at one of the many hotel in the city. However, I would recommend not driving directly into the city, specailly during Christmas, because you're going to regret it. The traffic in Midtown, Manhattan is very bad during the holidays.

My advice I would commend parking your car in Jersey City, NJ and take the PATH train, which is commuter railroad, from there to Manhattan. The fare is only $2.25 per trip, person.

As for hotel. Depending on your budget, may I recommend the website at the link below, which will be very much helpful.

In regards to your third question. Althought walking is fine rest of the year, during the holidays its going to worst. Therefore, if you want to get around fast, take the subway.

The fare on the subway is the same as the PATH train, $2.25 per person, per ride, regardless of distance traveled.

In regards to your fourth and fifth questions. Beside Rockefeller Center, which is home to the big tree, there are lots of places in the city with holiday lights. Grand Central, for example, has an annual light show inside the terminal's Main Concourse which goes on display right after Thanksgiving until the end of the year.

On Fift Avenue and East 56th Street, a giant snowflake is lit right above the intersection, while at Hearld Square, the Broadway side of Macy's flagship store is lit like a Christmas tree.

As for what other attraction to see in New York City. There is a lot to list, therefore, may I recommend the blog post at the link below, which will be very helpful.

For the full list of attractions, click on the link at the bottom of the blog post.

I hope this information is very helpful.

    Good luck

drive from your home to whichever city is closest and take a train into the city. Do not drive into Manhattan. From there get a one day unlimited subway card and see all of the free things (the Rockefeller christmast tree, times square, 9/11 memorial, world trade center, empire state building, chrysler building.) have fun!
