How long should a person wait for an answer to a marriage proposal?

She claims she loves me, my checkbook, my %$#!, and my home, and even my dog, but can't make a commitment to marriage. When do I give her the heave-ho for a no-response?

Update:

Yes, I want to marry her. But, I have waited an extraordinary period of time. The clock is ticking. I'm getting impatient...I feel like her personal national bank, to be honest. It's time to respond or hit the highway.

If they take more then 30 seconds to give you a big YES then assume that they are looking for a way to let you down easy, or possibly keep the cash flowing until you catch on they will never marry you.

Therein lies the problem with the "grand proposal". You should never propose without talking about it completely beforehand. Why should marriage be any different than the decision to purchase a house, start a family or switch careers? Life decisions need discussion.

If she has to think about it, she's not ready.

I personally believe the answer should be done at the same time the proposal has been done. But if they want time I would say maximum a week if they want to think about it, anymore thinking means they don't actual want to make the commitment in my view

My knees wouldn't have been able to handle more than 30 seconds when I asked my wife.

It was a concrete floor in February, so it was really cold... and since it was in a bar during halftime of the Superbowl, there was a lot of beer and crud on the floor.

I'd wait about 30 seconds. That gives her enough time to get over being speechless about happiness over the proposal.

You should tell her, though, so there is no mistake, that "If you say nothing, I will assume that means no."

Ask her again for the answer.

You should get yes this time.

You have so much, she won't refuse you.

But do you want to marry her really?

Because it's a big step. Just because she didn't say yes right away doesnt mean she doesnt love you- shes probably just not ready to take it to that step YET. Least she's being sensible and not just saying yes for your money. Don't give up yet :)
