Medieval era childbirth question?
I want to know side effects of childbirth for women in the medieval/middle age era. More specifically a difficult childbirth. How long could woman experience complications after the fact, and what would those complications be/ feel like. I need to know for a story, so thanks in advanced.

Difficult and prolonged labor can have many complications. Some are:
-Fistula. Where delivery tears an opening between either the vagina and the bladder, or between the rectum and the bladder. Causes continual leakage of urine or feces through the vagina. Curable easily now, but uncurable then. Mostly happens to very young mothers or significantly older 45+ mothers.
-Severe tearing. You always tear to some extent during birth but even now something like 15% of women tear badly enough that become incontinent of either stool or urine (nowadays we know how to fix this, so don't freak out should you wish to someday have a kid). Difficulty with intercourse.
-Hemorrhage. Severe blood loss. Usually would kill you before transfusions, but from a narrative point of view you could have it weaken your character for weeks (or months, since bloodletting was a popular technique).
-Prolapse. When childbirth weakens the muscles in the pelvic floor so that the uterus sags out of position. Worst-case scenario it can sag out of the vagina. Interestingly enough, they *did* know how to treat this back then ( you use a gizmo called a pessary). Lifelong injury.
-Infection. Without modern antibiotics, infection carried off more people than just about anything else. You could have fevers leading to permanent brain damage, enduring physical weakness... surviving a bad infection often weakened people forever.

back then child birth rates of success were low and even the baby surviving to young childhood was low... they obvious would have eventually realize that the female preferred to lay down and have help getting the baby out
but it would not have been done in a sterile way
