How good is a NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M GFX card?

Hi everyone,

I wanted some opinions about the NVIDA GeforcE GT 630M card. I'm currently configuring my HP computer to have these specs:

dv6t-7000

Operating system Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit edit

Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3210M Processor (2.5 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.1 GHz)

NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GT 630M Graphics with 1GB of dedicated video memory

8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)

750GB 7200RPM Hard Drive

15.6-inch diagonal HD BrightView LED-backlit Display (1366x768)

SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support

People have told me that I could consider upgrading the resolution to 1920x1080, but I honestly don't have another $150 to throw at this system. I don't watch a lot of HD anyways, so people tell me that I should be able to tolerate it anyways if I'm not used to higher resolution. Will this affect gaming in any way?

Anyways, I've checked out the graphics card on notebotebookcheck.net and it tells me that I can play Mass Effct 3 and Skyrim on medium settings. Instead of just spitting out FPS though, can someone tell me generally what the performance is like this card?

I had been considering this Lenovo Y480 Thinkpad, but my parents put their foot down because they think Lenovo is a trash brand and I had to respect that since part of this will come out of their tab. Anyways, that system had a Geforce GT550M -- is that gfx better by any significant margin? I'm not tech savvy, so it's hard for me to match up everything that notebookcheck.net says.

By configuring do you mean you are buying a pre-built custom system or are you upgrading a laptop you currently have? I'm sure I could find you a better laptop than that if you update your question with your budget...if you are upgrading though then the 630M is not a brilliant card, it would struggle to play Mass Effect 3 and Skyrim on medium settings...and the 550M is faster than a 630M and isn't too bad, it would play ME3 and Skyrim on medium settings fairly well.

As for Lenovo being a trash brand I have no idea where your parents got that from as they are a very good brand; they build solid computers and i'd personally go with them over HP.

The 650M will provide giant performance expand, though that's to not say greater pix pleasant. You may still be running on Medium settings, but it surely should operate much smoother than on the 630M, and with fewer overheating problems. As for the Lenovo Thinkpad, i'd say go for it! Lenovo is something however a "trash company". Formerly IBM, Lenovo makes one of the most stable computer's out there, they usually don't come close to as slowed down with bloatware as a Dell (and undoubtedly no longer as unhealthy as an HP). Preserve in mind that HP are also notorious for his or her bad cooling programs in their laptops. The entire DV6 line acquired recalled a few years in the past because of motherboard harm (heatsinks actually melting from the extraordinary warmth). In my honest opinion, i might received with Lenovo before another prefab process, adopted carefully by Samsung, ASUS, and Sony.
