What is the cheapest way to move household goods across the country?

I am moving around 1500 miles and am in a quandary. Do I want to pay $2000+ (U-haul + loading services + storage + car dolly + gas) to move $3000 worth of old crap? I'm about to just sell/dump it unless I can find a cheaper way to move it. Since I don't currently own a pickup truck, a towed trailer is pretty much out of the question. Is there a better way to move stuff?

Using a small container can cost less than driving a UHaul. I have used this UPack service several times, though we got semi-trailers, not the cube. And, when you arrive you don't have to unload right away. They will deliver the container when you are ready or store it for you.

Driving a UHaul truck is an experience you don't want to have.

no self serve is the least expensive way.. and also the most PITA way( you have to do all the work yourself)
