I'm writing a series of "spec ops" short stories and need weaponry advice.?
I'm posting this in military more because it seems fitting. As the question says I'm working on a series of stories centering around a fictional military force called "Division Six" (loosely based on GROM and the SAS). However I've hit upon a number of problems. The main one is I haven't sorted out what would be the best type of weapon for the unit to carry. As it stands, the timeline is about 30 years in the future, so I figure the M-14 and M-16 would be obsolete by then. However, what weapon would you expect (no lazer guns thank you very much) to be standard for that types of operational forces then?
Yeah, I realized the misspell on laser after I submitted the thing. My bad. Must pay attention to the red squiggly lines more.

Look up the MSR. It is currently being developed by the US Army. In every sense of the word it is next gen, using sophisticated integral optics, multiple firing modes, and uses caseless ammo.

If the current weapons will be retired how can the tell you what would be in service? All someone could tell you is what is being considered should they have a new completion out for a new weapons system.
A new rifle would likely have more and more synthetic materials such as polymer, carbon fiber vs. aluminum or other metal. Barrel would likely remain metal/steel.
Look at the XM8 that rifle did seem like it would be the next standard rifle but the competition was canceled. Also the SCAR would be one to look at for your story.
LAZER? it's laser.

Two weapons have stood the test of time and are still a very useful thing to have are deadly quick and silent> the only noise they make is "WOOSH" Long Bow, and Cross Bow, and catapult.
