Driving from Calgary AB to Anaheim CA . Where to stop?

At Christmas we will be driving from Calgary AB Canada, to Anaheim CA USA. It is of course not a day long drive and we are looking to extend it to about a 2 or 3 day drive. What would be the best cities or towns along the way to stop and stay in. (Approximately 8-12 hours apart). Not looking for great attractions just looking for convenience and cheap hotel rates.

If you are going via the Pacific Coast Highway:

    1. Pasco Washington.

    2. Newport Oregon

    3. Brookings (beautiful spot) Oregon

    4. Sacramento or Redding California (if you can make it in 1 shot)

*skip Eureksa California since it is a craphole. Try to squeeze in a fair time for the Redwood forest between Brookings and Sacramento!

The I 15 route is hell of the highway. Crappy food, crappy scenery and very boring.

Without knowing what routes you're taking or just how far you plan to drive in a day, or even exactly how many days you want to travel, how can anyone answer this? Get out a map, figure out which way you want to go, how far you think you'll travel in a day, figure out where to stop, look up what motels there are in that place. A quick look at my road atlas shows that if you plan to take 3 days and highways 2 and 15, stopping at Butte and Salt Lake City or Provo will break up the trip into 3 more or less even portions.

I like Motel 6, and they are all over the place. They're cheap, all the ones I have stayed in are clean, and they have no problem with my dog. Check their website for locations.

All above give good information . I 15 is a little faster. plan on more than one route at that time of year you may need to detour because of weather. You have basically two roads North South and about 4 east west to choose from. Select various spots to investigate places to stay on these routes.

You have to cross the mountains somewhere and all of the passes can close at any time due to snow

watch the weather and plan accordingly. This is why you do not want to book more than a day or two ahead for a long road trip. The distance you cover can vary greatly with the weather. Plan on two LONG days or three shorter ones for this trip. If you have multiple drivers it is not to hard to do it in two days.

You should head due south so you get to Interstate 15,

Really, just stop at the next town after driving for 10 hours. You might make Provo UT the first day if you are lucky. Las Vegas for the second night if you are lucky.

I never plan on where I will stop overnight when I take road trips.

Plan on 3 days driving to get there.

I know if it was the other way around (picking up a puppy in Calgary from ID Falls) the US citizen now needs a passport to get back into the US (from Canada). I am going to guess that Canadian citizens need passports to get into the US, now, also. Don't forget to get all the paperwork (veteranarian checks, shots, etc.) filled out for the dog, too!
