I'm going to NYC during the winter. I have no clue what to bring. (Please include obvious stuff!!)

If you're going to be out and about then consider bringing the following:
1) A big, heavy coat (Pack it even if you end up needing nothing more than a light jacket.)
2) Gloves
3) Hat or ear muffs
4) Small pack of tissues (You can also pick some up later in the travel size or paper sections of local drug stores.)
5) A real camera (Cellphone cameras are lackluster.)
6) Extra battery for the camera if you have one
7) Mini-tripod or a GorillaPod (if you're interested in nighttime photos that don't look crummy and blurred)
8) A pair of walking shoes (hopefully broken in already)
9) A map (You can take macro photos of paper maps or Internet maps and keep them on your phone or camera instead of having to carry a paper map. There are also cellphone apps out there....)
10) Cash (Yes, there are still places that accept only cash so maybe you should start off with a few bucks when you arrive. After that there are ATM places in town.)

I would add: make sure those shoes are comfy, and have arch supports. You'll be walking on pavement all day, probably. Layer your clothing, so when you are inside, you can unbutton or unzip and not get too hot. Don't forget your sunglasses.
Also, if you go to some places, Like the Metropolitan MoA, they allow cameras but can give you trouble about camera bags and tripods. Better to just wear it around your neck while there.

My friend, brings lots of warm clothes, especially if you're going to be out a lot.
Good luck
