This probability problem has a surprising result.?
Suppose we have a needle (infinitesimally thin) of length x. We drop this needle randomly on a large sheet of lined paper that has parallel lines with separation x apart. Assuming the needle can't not land on the lined paper, what is the probability that the needle crosses a line?

This is an old, well-known problem called Buffon's Needle. We did this in calc class some time ago. Rather than pontificate about it and the various parameters here, I will supply you with a web page you can look over and also see some differing cases as well.
