Personally, I do not believe that you need to gain any weight for football. Based on your height and weight, I believe that you will make a very good fit at free safety. You have the ideal size for a high school junior varsity free safety.
My best advice for you is to work hard and perform very well in practice every day. In addition, what you need to do this autumn (and every offseason) is eat healthy, exercise by doing weight lifting, and either jogging or going for a long run every day. If you do these things, you will get faster, stronger, into better shape, and gain some muscle, which will greatly improve your chances of becoming a successful, top notch free safety in high school football, who could go on to play college football in the future.

Hi there, I'm a senior and I play strong safety. I'm 6'0 and 190. I believe that to play safety you need to be fast and light on your feet. If you want to get bigger, I suggest getting big from bottom up, meaning work on your legs first, then move up to the upper body. Do sprints and runs to burn the carbs, then work on squats and explosion drills to gain the muscle. This way you not only get bigger, but also get faster. Then move up to the shoulders by hitting the clean and press and pull up. This helps to make your shoulders stronger, which helps in tackling. Train your catching everyday! For fun, just get someone to throw you the ball. What I did was to run receiver routes which really helped in both catching and knowing the routes.
Good luck playing football and safety, hope you tear it up!
