Holding the Qur'an with the left hand?
Salam Alaikum,
Is it bad or haram to hold the Qur'an Al-Kareem with the left hand, months ago, my friend held it with the left hand and i told her its not good and she asked me why (she is a muslim she opens her hair, wears tight clothes, parties, and so on) I then answered her from what i was told when i was little about age 4 or 5 when i was in islamic school, its because you use the left hand to wash urself, clean, bad things , is for the use of bad things and right hand, you eat with it, you use it for good and so on (i dont know how to explain it clearly but please understand). so after telling her she was about to burst out of laugh so i held the quran myself although it wasnt mine. So my question is is it bad or haram to hold the quran with the left hand? if not or yes please give me some reasons I don't want to say false things if i'm wrong.
Thank you... Salam
not only that when praying, the right hand is over the left hand. and thank you very much my brothers and sisters. May Allah bless you for answering to my question.

Thanks for your question,
It is more appropriate to hold the Qur'an with the right hand as a sign of honour to it. The Sunnah of the Prophet pbuh illustrated that it is desirable to use the right hand in everything that we wish to honour.
'Aa'ishah may Allaah be pleased with her said: "That the Prophet pbuh used to prefer to start with the right hand or right side (over the left) when putting on his shoes, combing his hair, putting on perfume, and in all his matters." [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]
'Aa'ishah may Allaah be pleased with her also said: "The Prophet pbuh used his right hand in applying perfume, in eating, and used his left hand in the toilet or when removing any harm." [Abu Daawood]
So the above narrations illustrate that it is preferable to use the right hand when honouring anything, and the left hand is used when there is any harm or dirt, like using the toilet.

I think that the left hand thing is an outdated cultural thing because people do not use their hand to clean up, but, use hoses with sprinkler heads nowadays and, I'm told that they may even use their right hand, if they're right handed.
Anyways, the long and short of it is that that custom of using the hand to wipe and clean is no longer used and hence the associating of "unclean" with it is no longer valid.
Also, let's face a fact, the Koran is just a book. It is not something that is more than printed words on paper.
Like it or not, that's a fact.
And, God would not be bothered by such small things, if He were real.
But then, you voiced your opinion and I think you did it with good intentions and not bad; so, it should be OK.

The left hand isn't haram lol. The whole point in the hadiths saying "don't use left hand while eating, etc." was because back in the day the left hand was used to clean yourself after defecation. As long as you've done wudu, hold the Qur'an how you like in your hands.

A lot is made of the left hand for bad things and right hand for good things often too much and far beyond the right hand for eating and left hand for toilet.
I am naturally left handed and the way some people react it was as if I was cursed , Arabic however is easier to write left handed than it is with the right hand but to please people I learned to write right handed.

I think that this is a very interesting question.
No body can wash themselves with just one hand. Try it! How would you wash your left elbow?
Is the right rand only for holding the Quoran and nothing else?
How can you cook with just one hand?
Are these customs just for men who don't do anything for themselves?
