I don't see why we should be restricted to one child and considering that under the Howard Government we were encouraged to have children, baby bonus, I don't see any bills being passed in the near future to enact such measures here.

It is irrelevant if we believe there are "good" and "bad" parents (who is to judge this? who decides what is "good" and what is "bad"?) The best Australia can do is ensure parenting skills are available for those that want them (which there currently is throughout Australia, ironically they all run during work hours so makes it hard to attend them).

I think encouraging a sustainable and more self-sufficient lifestyle would be a good thing in Australia, that is reduce the consumption of individuals (therefore a larger population can live on fewer resources).

I think urban sprawl is an issue in Australia, however this is not so much to do with how many children you have but again the lifestyle that Aussies want (and perhaps the lifestyle we should be encouraged to live).

Australian needs and can handle a larger population. The official birth rate last I looked was supplying less then the death rate. Our businesses suffer because we have too small a customer base as it is.

For those who will howl this down claiming Australia can not support more then tell me why food is still being destroyed just to increase the shelf prices.

To adopt this policy would cause use to disappear up you know where.

    Hi,

No I don't - we are not in China. Just read up on the sort of hardships and pain that the single child policy has done in China - it has led to abortions so that only male children survive and then the low rate of females will lead to population probelms in China in a generations time.

Australia doesn't have a population problem and if we could just sort out the boat people problem and curb all the illegals trotting over from Indonesia then we would be better off.

Personally I believe in us replacing ourselves but most of us these days have enough brains to only have as many children as we can afford but you can never legislate against stupidity.

Well I can't agree with that, as I have two children, but the whole world has to manage its population - we are already using more resources than we can sustainably produce.

I immediately thought of all these Muslims coming to Australia & their multitude of kids. They, & their government appointed & funded advocates & advisers would be up in arms if they tried to restrict the number of kids these people had.

Imagine if they were restricted to, say two children. They would scream blue murder because it would cut down their Centrelink benefits. It's best to have about seven kids & then there is no need for them to work - just live off welfare.

But no, I wouldn't like to see Australians restricted to one child, because all the "only child" kids I have come across have been spoilt horrible brats.

That would definitely fix the problem of traffic in the future, but I'm sure we'd also suffer from underpopulation.

Our population isn't in danger. We aren't China.

I'd go one further & suggest that some people shouldn't be allowed to have any ! The counter to that is that others who have got obvious good parenting potential should be practically encouraged to have as many as they are able ...

Is that so more Muslim Illegals can come in and be better treated than any Aussie.

Are you listening to them on Nauru now. So many Aussies have worked hard throughout their lives and these undesirables can just come in and demand the world.

One of these illegals apparently tried to commit suicide, the others are on hunger strike, should all Australians go on hunger strikes when one of our kids commits suicide.

If they don't like it here go back to their wives and children they left in a so called dangerous country, only dangerous for our soldiers and their allies!

Don't the Lefties hate the truth with a vengeance!

I tend to agree with Aussie, there are some people who just shouldn't have children.
