2003 Pontiac Grand Prix stall problem?

My buddy has a 2003 grand prix. The problem hes been having is the car stalls while hes driving every once in a while and the temp guage isnt normal it moves. he took it to a deal and he said that its a cracked head and itll cost 3 grand. which it isnt even worth that and i think theyre bull**** him. From what i think i believe it to be the crankshaft pos sensore maybe. others said maybe the cadalitic converted. Im pretty sure its not a cracked head, it runs to go to be that and not over heating noticably. what you think?

Most likely GM will seize as much as you with a notification by way of the mail once the title is processed together with your identify & tackle. The used automobile dealership technically doesnt ought to comply with these principles of a take into account like a GM dealership would ought to. Subsequent, it would depend in your VIN as good because no longer all 2002 Grand Prix's are incorporated on this campaign. Yours might not fall within the VIN breakpoint & no longer want this repair. That you would be able to just wait for the letter to come into the mail or for those who havent gotten one yet, it may mean yours isnt on the record that desires it achieved. The VIN breakpoint is 2F100018 --- 2F293183. So if your final 8 digits of the VI?N doesnt fall in between these 2 numbers, it manner yours doesnt want it nor will GM or the dealership exchange that however, you might go get your oil exchange at a GM dealership & they are think to appear up any open campaigns on the automobile once they write it up & if any are open, they are suppose to inform you that it has an OPEN keep in mind & it should be repaired when your ready to have it executed or if materials are readily available which if they arent, they would ought to get them organized & have you ever come back to have it accomplished. I didnt see a cut OFF date on it like some have. Often security CAMPAIGNS, there is no point in time on. What is your final eight digits of the VIN??

Doubt if it's a cracked head but it can be a head gasket problem.

Check the coolant level when the engine is cold and if it needs any you have a leak, internal or external.

3 grand for an engine is almost twice what it should be.

Get a second or even a third opinion from a MECHANIC who has seen and tested the car.

I think that anyone who goes to a dealer for anything other than warranty work is wasting a lot of money.

Dealers are only a notch above chain and franchise type auto repair shops.

The best way to go is to get a personal referral from someone trustworthy to an independent auto repair shop in your area.

By going to an independent shop you aren't paying for the humongous overhead or advertising budgets that are common to chains and franchises.

You're also getting more well diversified mechanics as opposed to dealers, since they don't just work on one type of car.

I am an Automotive Service Technition but cannot help without seeing, hearing, etc. Is there discolored smoke coming from exhast or hood? Can you smell anything when driving it? This would mean the guy who checked it is probobly right however i cant give you any diagnosis of the vehicle without seeing it myself.
