What do jumpers do in a PCB?

What is the function of a jumper in a PCB?

I am trying to connect a bare LiPo battery onto my PCB. The schematic that I have requires me to use a 2 pin jumper for the connection. The jumper basically seems like 2 pads. Can I just throw down 2 pads instead of using a jumper or does a jumper do something more?

A jumper merely connects two pins together. You don't connect something else using a jumper, but a jumper may be used to tell the PCB something is present or absent. If the place it is asking you to install a jumper is just two pads, then that version of the PCB was not intended to support that function (otherwise the pins would be there). You could always try just shorting the two pads together with a small piece of wire but the function may not even exist on that version of the board.
