Calculating Square roots?

I mean I know youre supposed to find the number multiplied by itself, but what if you dont have a calculator and you have a decimal number? For example I have the number 1.69 and im supposed to find the square root of THAT? Please explain how you would solve THAT?

Thanks very much :)

In this case, you're supposed to recognise that 169 = 13^2

    so 1.69 = 13^2/100

    and therefore sqrt(1.69) = 13/10 = 1.3

otherwise, without a calculator, there's no quick way to obtain the square root.
