There are two types of solar air conditioners, conventional air conditioners modified to operate on DC power and hence avoid the energy losses of an inverter and an absorption air conditioner which uses heat to drive the compression and evaporation cycle.

Companies that offer the Absorption air conditioners are Robur, Yazaki and Sakur. As you can see, the Japanese dominate the field. In general absorption air conditioners are traditionally very large in order to improve efficiencies and are only used for large campuses and hospitals but the Japanese have a talent for making things small.

The Robur products would have to be modified and would likely require a lithium nitrate solar thermal system as it's designed for natural gas to be the heat source. They once had a small unit which used hot water as a heat source but that model is no longer offered however it's why Robur is on this list.

When I first looked into this not too many years ago, the Robur 5 ton unit had just ceased production and the Yazaki 30 ton unit was the product of choice. However, that results in an airconditioner powerful enough for ten homes and would cost over $30,000 not including the solar thermal collectors required. Now with the Sakura product, we may see a rebirth of residential absorption systems but it is essentially an untried brand for many installers and absorption systems less than 150 tons are inefficient.
