im about to wire a plug for the first time on my own. Help?

My hair straighner broke and i think its because the wires came loose inside the plug. i unscrewed the plug and inside there was only a blue and brown wire. i understand that i have to connect the brown wire to the L terminal and blue wire to the N terminal but im not sure how to connect them. do I for example wrap wires from the brown wire anound the L terminal (which i persume is the screw-looking part of the pin labelled L of the plug) or do i just make sure the wires are barely touching off of the terminal? help would really be appreciated.

    Look at the photograph..

    http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQYJDXFCiZ...

The blue wire goes to the Live pin. That's the one with the fuse (C in the photo).

The brown wire goes to the Neutral pin (B in the photo).

Ignore the Earth pin because you don't have a green/yellow earth wire (A in the photo).

Trim back the insulation so that you have about 1 centimetre of bare wire showing. Wind the small strands up between finger and thumb so that you don't have any loose strands flying around. Note that you shouldn't have too much length of wire inside the plug or you'll have trouble fitting the cover back on.

Sometimes there are pins with holes and a small screw. Loosen the small screw and then fold the bare wire back on itself to make a thicker bundle 0.5 cm. Push this into the hole and tighten the locking screw.

If you have the type with a single screw at the end of the pin then loosen the scew, but don't take it out. Wrap the bare wire around the threads of the screw and then tighten it up. Be sure to wind the wire around in the direction of the scew thread so that it tightens as you do up the screw. If you get it the wrong way around then it will come off when you tighten the screw.

If there are washers make sure that the washer traps the wire so it doesn't come off around the screw head.

Whichever type of plug you have you must make sure that the cable clamp, where the wire enters the plug, is done up properly and tightly. It should clamp against the outer sheath of the mains lead, not against the blue and brown cores. If you have it clamping against the cores then you've stripped off too much of the outer sheath. The clamp is shown under the person's thumb in the photo.

If you push the pins through, you will see a hole where the screw tightens into. The wire goes into the hole and the screw tightens to hold it there. The blue one is easy, but look carefully at the brown one and where the fuse fits so that you can put it together again. The white insulation of the cable should be trapped by a bar where it enters the plug. This is also important to stop it coming loose again. I suggest you try to get help first though. Or look it up on the internet, with diagrams.

  • There are two different arrangements for attaching the cable to the terminal.

The most common type has a brass block with a hole in it and a screw. Undo the screw until the hole is not obstructed. Twist the wires together and poke them into the hole (make sure none are left out). Then tighten the screw so that the cable is fixed tightly.

The other type has a threaded post with a securing nut that you tighten with a screwdriver. Take the nut right off and wind the wire round the post so none is sticking out. Now attach the nut making sure you put it on straight and tighten it.

Where the cable comes out of the plug there is a cable clamp. If it is the type fixed with 2 screws, make sure they are tight.

When changing a three pin plug always remember it's brown wire to the fuse, green to the earth and blue to N.
