Unpaid Fare Notice! Do I have to pay?
So I forgot to top up my oyster card and I asked the bus driver if he could let me off for today since I was going to be late for work. He said it's fine but then he gave me a yellow ticket "Unpaid Fare Notice" and the fine is £20.
£20 is bit high for a 5-10 minutes journey, if he told me that he would've given me a ticket before I got on I would have walked off the bus. But anyways, do I really have to pay? It's not like the bus driver took my details or anything, or can he get it from somewhere?

I expect he got your details from your oyster card.

You're not being charged £20 for a 5-10 minutes journey (as you put it), you're being fined for not having the correct fare for the journey which you took. You should've paid in cash if you didn't have enough on your Oyster card. The driver can't just let you off the fare; he has no right to do so and would risk his own job in doing so. What do you think happens when a ticket inspector demands to see your ticket? Do you think he'll accept the excuse that the driver let you off? He'll report both you and the driver. Don't be so selfish; pay like everyone else does.

Yes you do. It is your responsibility to keep your Oyster Card topped up which you can do at many small shops and Underground stations and many railway stations

Tough, the rules are you need to pay the fare to travel. If you didn't, then you become liable to pay the fixed penalty.
