if I take my macbook hdd and put it in a slightly newer macbook pro, (same OS) will it boot?
macbook 1 has 500gb hdd, macbook 2 has faster processor, slightly newer, but only has a 160 hdd. /They run the exact OS
Can I simply pull the 500 hdd and put it in macbook 2 and bootup as normal?

No, because the rest of the hardware is different. It may or may not boot, but even if it does it will be wonky due to the driver and hardware differences.
