Partner has severe tooth pain: Advice?

So my partner has been suffering severely for the past few days.

He has an overwhelming toothache that is due to an infection of the root canal. The pain is so severe that he has described it as unbearable. The pain only comes around when he is attempting to sleep. If he is not trying to go to sleep, the pain doesn't occur anywhere near as much. It is when he sleeps that it becomes so bad that it wakes him and then has him rocking back and forth in tears of agony.

The tooth is scheduled to be pulled Tuesday. That's another three sleeps. We've got him on Nurofen pain relief and paracetamol.

Is there anything else we can do to lessen his suffering until that point?

Update:

Edit:

Thanks for the response. We've already got him sleeping on the sofa. It's not doing any good.

i feel for him, there is nothing worse than a toothache...i usually take advil, and alternate the advil with tylenol.....try taking garlic pills, it is a natural antibiotic

It seems to me your son has undergone a total personality change...you said this goes on all day sometimes...I don't think this is from teething...I agree with the last post that you need to make another trip to the doctor and maybe even get a second opinion. If your son is literally pulling out fistfuls of your hair, and kicking you in the throat, I REALLY don't think that is from teething... It sounds like a neurological problem....teething hurts, yes, but not to that extreme that I have EVER heard of. A usually sweet-mannered baby does not go to violent overnight because of teething...this sounds serious and I would get him back to the doctor quick and demand some answers. His personality has changed! That is a MAJOR sign of something seriously wrong. I hope for you it is teething that is causing this...and if it truly just that then other than the wet and cold washclothhs, popsicles, and other cold stuff for him to chew on (if he will), and the pain medicine, the only thing you can do is keep him really busy and preoccupied with something else when the pain is really bad. I feel so sorry for the poor boy. I hope you get this figured out, and soon. Good luck!

Call the doctor asap and tell him you need a stronger pain medication, something that contains a narcotic. If it is too bad, go to the emergency department and get some pain medication.

    Good luck.

He needs an antibiotic if it is infected. See a dentist as soon as you can. Best of luck.
