A friend has a 2008 Jeep Patriot and he wants to install a CB radio inside, but there is no place to install?

the radio, Can he just lay the radio on the seat or does it need to be attached to a metal bracket for proper grounding etc... Also he wants to install a magnet mount K-40 antenna on the roof as there is no area for installing it with the clip that it is provided with.Is there a way of installing the magnet mount without scratching the roof or marring the paint.?? that was purchased in the 80,s.... Has the mount design changed since then.?? Thanks for all the replys.

I found an interior shot of the 08 Patriot. I edited it to point a few spots that may help to install a cb radio. http://i49.tinypic.com/242fms3.jpg The radio itself would need to be grounded. If the radio is set on the seat, a ground wire can be attached to the radio chassis and then to a ground point inside the vehicle.

On the magnet mounts, you can use adhesive felt material found at most arts/crafts stores such as Michaels. The adhesive side applies to the magnet and the felt side would sit against the car body. The felt is soft and would help protect the paint. You would want to remove the magnet mount and clean underneath it a few times a month. Moisture and dirt can still get under the magnet.

Yes he can just lay it on the seat but it will need to be grounded one way of another. Most units have both a power lead and a ground lead so they can be grounded anywhere. I have a Cobra CB mounted to the back of the plastic console in my Wrangler and just drilled a hole in the floor pan at the base of the console and grounded it there. Works like a champ.

The radio itself can lay right on the seat but I don't recommend it. There are many radios available that are very small and can mount in only a few inches of space. There are also remote style radios that mount under the seat and have the controls for channel, volume, squelch etc. on the microphone.

The mounting bracket doesn't ground anything and anybody that says it does is an idiot. All the bracket does is hold the radio. The radio will have a pair of wires coming out of it. One is red usually with a fuse holder in the middle of it-that's the power wire. The other is the ground and can be grounded anywhere to the chassis of the vehicle.

You can place a thin piece of cloth under the magnet to prevent it from scratching the vehicles finish.
