6.1 doesn't sound that big. The Loma Prieta earthquake that hit California in 1989 was 6.9. Each point on the Richter scale is 40 times more powerful than the next. The Loma Prieta earthquake killed 63 people, most of them in a double-decker freeway that collapsed because it was built on unstable fill land. Some houses in San Francisco's Marina District collapsed because they were also built on fill land. In the rest of the San Francisco Bay Area, people were just seriously inconvenienced for a few days because of power outages. There was a lot of minor property damage, like cracks in walls and broken glass.

On the other hand, Armenia had an earthquake about the same size, and it killed 25,000 people. That's because California has stricter building codes.

If a 6.1 earthquake hit California, probably nobody would get killed. Just some property damage (like 1 in 100 houses).

Depends on the location and the depth. An example..this week there was an earthquake in Chile of magnitude 6.1 at a depth of 60km, this earthquake was harmless and only faintly felt by the people living around..but in the other hand the 5.8 earthquake that happened in Italy months ago created a lot of damage around the epicenter and also killed 17 people.

Depends on the depth of the origin the shallower the more surface disruption. The further you are from the epicentre the less the shaking felt.

First of all, it all depends on where you are. If you are in the desert or in the middle of the woods it wouldn't cause that much damage. If you were in say New York on the other hand, it would cause a BUNCH of damage. They would not be able to evacuate because there is no way to tell when an earthquake is going to happen. The most we can do is record the earthquakes with seismographs and look for a pattern in them.

A 6.1 earthquake in an area(such as california, or japan) would not do too much as most of the buildings were built with specific foundations which help to resist strains caused by earthquakes. Other areas such as third world countries, or places with lots of concrete/brick based houses that are not used to earthquakes would impact them the most. I assume some structures would definitely fall.
