What 'mistakes' did you make cooking food in a microwave oven?

The worst I did was trying to make small meatballs. I made little brown cannon balls instead.

I covered a dish of curry I was heating in tinfoil.

The ensuing pyrotechnics had me diving for cover behind the cat.

    Well I didn't know did I?

    Hello,

None, for fast cooking I use a pressure cooker. According to the world's top chefs a microwave oven is only good for two things:

    1) Thawing out frozen items when you are in a hurry to use them.

    2) Re-heating left overs.

I heard that years ago and never used a microwave to cook dinners again.

    Cheers,

    Michael Kelly

  • This was long before I knew this, ut I would put tin foil wrap food in it..yeah it caught on fired alright!!

Other then that I will not cook/bake in the microwave..I just warm things up in it.

It took me several episodes to finally realize that if I cover the food I won't have to clean a big mess in the microwave every time I use it. Of course when they first came out I too tried a boiled egg and with the same results as you all.

    Cannon balls LOL

I must of read the same pop corn instructions as Mal. cause I too tried to cremate my pop corn. I was reheating some sliced pork loin and turned them into hockey pucks. Hey we can all save our over cooked food and shoot it at our enemies. Save our countries military budget. Now just how would that be ? Can I paten my idea.

I set fire to a plastic jar of peanut butter. I had put the jar in the fridge, because I don't use it often and it gets rancid if I leave it out. So I put it in the microwave to make it spreadable. But I hadn't realized that when I had pulled off the seal on top it left a small ring of foil on the edge. Which flamed really fast. Fortunately I was standing right there and was able to grab it before it damaged anything. It did get my heart going there for a minute.

Perfecting the ole microwaved poach egg is my claim to fame in this area.

Adding the right amount of drops of water to the egg in its little bowl, pricking the yolk the right size of nick and adjusting the power level of the bluddy microwave oven so that it is not over done is worth a tertiary qualification. Cleaning burst egg off the walls of the microwave oven (yes I did cover the little bowl securely with plastic wrap and I left a little vent) is akin to becoming a professor of microwave cookery. It took about 5 sessions but I have it down pat now and they are poached perfectly to my liking.

I smouldered a bag of microwave popcorn, took about a month for the smell to leave the microwave, wiping it down after every use to clean the smoke residue.

I over-cooked bison hot dogs, easy to do because they are low-fat.

Had to experiment with scrambled eggs when I first used a microwave, they were practically dehydrated the first time I made them.
