what is deer tanned cowhide?

Just wondering why it's called deer tanned. How does it differ from regular tanned cowhide?

Often, when describing linings, "deer tanning" indicates that the leather was tanned to have a soft, supple feel to it. For a glove lining, this would not only make it more comfortable, but would also heighten sensitivity (because ballplayers know that you close the glove with the fingertips and not the whole hand).

When talking about the exterior of the glove, it could still mean that the leather is softer (and thus more 'broken in" than standard cowhide, but it is sometimes just a reference to the color. Tanned deerskin has a distinctive yellow-brown tint compared to cowhide, which tends to be more pale.

You need a solution of slaked lime. Make it up and let your deer hide soak in it for a couple days. Take the hide out and scrape off all of the hair. Be sure to wear long gloves and eye protection becasue the stuff is very caustic. If you get any on your skin, flush it off with lots of water and then rinse the area with some vinegar water. Make the best of it becaue this will be the only deer hide that you will EVER tan. Trust me on this. Once you have seen how much work it is and how rough the chemicals are on your skin, you will send all future hides to a tannery. Have fun but be careful and work safely.
