How did the Republican lose their place as the party of civil rights?
The party of Lincoln, abolition whos members formed the NAACP lost the leadership to the Democrates. The same Democrates who blocked the civil rights act, passed the Jim Crow laws and created the KKK. What was the turning point?

The Republican party began as a mixture of abolitionist Whigs, free-soilers, and Democrats. FDR took over during the worst depression in the history of the free market. The man was a democrat. People loved him, blacks and whites. Then came Truman, who painted his contemporary republicans as heartless. JFK, people loved his youthful idealism, was a democrat. LBJ, the man who founded our social safety net, was democrat.
As you can see, democrats became more and more socially active, while Republicans began to move to the right, with evangelicalism. When Reagan, ****** Reagan, came into office, social safety net was ruined. No, there's no single turning point, rather, it's a gradual process
